NDO - The value of retail sales and consumer services was estimated at VND1,267.9 trillion (US$55.79 billion) in the first four months of 2017, up 9.6% over the same period last year.

If price increases were excluded, the value rose only 6.7%, lower than the 7.8% increase during the January-April period of 2016.

In April alone, retail sales and consumer services reached VND317.5 trillion (US$13.97 billion), up 1.7% from the previous month and 11.1% from 12 months earlier.

A breakdown of sectors show retail sales in the first four months rose 9.7% to an estimated VND955.8 trillion (US$42 billion), of which food went up 10.5%, clothes and footwear 8.6%, and home appliances 7.3%.

During the period, accommodation and food services brought in VND153.4 trillion (US$6.75 billion), up 11.3% year on year while travel services rose 6.3% to VND10.3 trillion (US$453.2 million).

Other services generated about VND148.4 trillion (US$6.53 billion), up 7% from the first four months of 2016.

It is notable that the consumer price index in April stayed flat compared with the previous month despite an increase in purchase power.
