Vietnam's cement exports more than double in both volume and value

The export of cement and clinker increased sharply in the first month of 2018.

NDO – Vietnam's cement and clinker exports increased sharply in the first month of 2018, at over 100% in both volume and value, according to the General Department of Vietnam Customs.

Accordingly, the export of cement and clinker increased by 121% in volume and 112% in value over the same period last year, reaching 2.9 million tonnes, equivalent to US$101.12 million.

However, cement and clinker prices in January decreased 4.6% compared with December 2017, at an average of US$34.8 per tonne.

Among the 12 major export markets for Vietnamese clinker and cement, exports to Bangladesh were the highest, accounting for 31.3% of the total, with over 909,109 tonnes.

The Philippines was the second largest consumer market for Vietnamese clinker and cement, accounting for 20% of the country's total exports, valued at US$26.06 million. China was in third, with 758,555 tonnes worth US$23.96 million last month, despite Vietnam not exporting cement to its neighbouring market in January 2018.

In general, cement and clinker exports in the first month of this year increased in most markets compared to the same period in 2017, of which exports to Taiwan (China) saw the highest increase, up 545.6% in volume to reach 161,407 tonnes worth US$4.88 million.

Other markets also witnessed sharp increases, including Malaysia up 109.3% in volume and 91.4% in turnover, at 65,292 tonnes and US$2.03 million, respectively; and the Philippines increased by 114, 9% in volume and 85.4% in turnover.

Cement and clinker exports in the first month of this year increased in most markets compared to the same period in 2017.
