NDO – The index of industrial production for February dropped by 17.1% against the previous month, according to the General Statistics Office (GSO), citing the Tet holiday for the slowdown in industrial activity.

But compared with the same month of last year, the index had risen by 8%, the GSO said.

Specifically the manufacturing sector increased by 10.7%, power generation and distribution climbed 3%, and water supply and waste treatment edged up 1%, while the mining sector dropped 1.8%.

The overall index for the first two months of 2018 still saw an increase of 15.2%, compared with a rise of only 2.4% during the same period of last year.

A breakdown of regions shows the index recorded the highest growth in Bac Ninh province at 45.1%, while the two economic hubs of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City saw rises of 10% and 6.2% respectively.

It is notable that the number of jobs at industrial enterprises rose 3.6% from a year earlier.
