Activities commemorate Day for Victims of Agent Orange

Nhan Dan – A series of practical activities have been held in many cities and provinces to mark 52 years since the first use of Agent Orange/dioxin in Vietnam and the Day for AO victims.

The Hanoi Association of AO Victims (HAAV) held a meeting on August 9 to mark the occasion, praising eight organisations for outstanding contributions to AO victims and people infected with the toxic chemical. The HAAV also presented gifts worth VND500,000 to 52 AO victims in Hanoi.

On the same day, the Soc Trang provincial Association of Victims of Agent Orange/Dioxin presented 44 scholarships to local victims to help overcome difficulties in their lives and studies. The Kien Giang provincial Association of Victims of Agent Orange/Dioxin also presented 650 gifts to victims in Rach Gia city, Kien Giang province.

A programme entitled ‘Chia Se Noi Dau Xuyen The He’ (Sharing intergenerational pain) was jointly held by the Quang Ninh provincial Association of Victims of Agent Orange/Dioxin and the provincial Communist Youth Union. On the occasion, the provincial Fatherland Front's Committee also presented VND175 million (US$8,200) to build and repair houses for seven families of local AO victims.

Meanwhile, the Da Nang Association of Victims of Agent Orange/Dioxin began construction on a rehabilitation centre for AO victims. Total investment for the centre tops VND2 billion (US$ 94,750). The 200 sq m project is scheduled for completion in four months.

The Lang Son provincial Hanoi Association of Victims of Agent Orange/Dioxin launched a month of actions for AO victims. At the opening ceremony, many organisations and individuals chipped in with over VND400 million (US$19,000)to the Support Fund for Victims of Agent Orange of Lang Son province. The Lang Son Association of Victims of Agent Orange/Dioxin also presented 20 gifts to local AO victims.
