NDO – Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong commenced his State visit to Cambodia on July 20 at the invitation of Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni.
The visit, which takes place on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Vietnam – Cambodia diplomatic ties, is expected to provide an opportunity for the two sides to review the outcomes of their cooperation over the past five decades, open up a new stage of development, and bring their bilateral ties to new heights.
It is the second state-level visit to the neighbouring nation by the Party leader, following the first one made in December 2011 after the 11th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam.
During this year’s visit, Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong will convey the friendly sentiment of the Vietnamese people to their Cambodian friends, as well as congratulations for the achievements gained by Cambodia under the clear-sighted reign of King Norodom Sihamoni and the leadership of the Royal Government.
Cambodia has gained significant and comprehensive achievements in maintaining peace, stability and development during its national construction, playing a more significant role and position in the region and the world at large. The Cambodian People’s Party recently secured victory in the commune/ward people’s council election, the fourth tenure in 2017 and has positively prepared for the general election in 2018. The country has maintained stability in its security, political and social situation, while retaining a high growth rate in economic development, with an annual GDP growth rate of 7%. The livelihood of the countries citizens has been improved and the country’s external relations have been strengthened and expanded.
Despite experiencing tough and challenging periods over the past 50 years, the people of Vietnam and Cambodia have promoted solidarity, worked closely together and supported each other in the national struggle for liberation in each country in the past, as well as in the national construction and development at present. The solidarity is a valuable and sacred asset which needs to be preserved and nurtured by the two nations.
Over the past few years, the two countries have maintained the exchange of high-ranking visits in order to develop the bilateral solidarity, traditional friendship and comprehensive cooperation. The traditional ties between the Communist Party of Vietnam and the Cambodian People’s Party have been strengthened under the spirit of fostering the solidarity, friendship and comprehensive cooperation between the two States and peoples.
The two countries have also seen an increase in bilateral trade, which has averaged US$ 3 billion per year in the last five years and reached US$ 1.6 billion in the first five months of this year. The two sides have set the target of reaching US$5 billion in two-way trade in the near future. Vietnam currently has almost 200 investment projects, with total registered capital of approximately US$ 3 billion, in Cambodia, focusing on the agriculture and forestry sectors.
Relations between the ministries, sectors and localities of the two countries have also flourished. The two sides have placed priorities on beefing up cooperation under signed agreements, addressing border issues, and maintaining security and stability in border areas. The two countries have to date completed 84% of of the work under the agreement on land border demarcation and border marker planting and are striving to fulfil this task as soon as possible in order to turn their shared border into a border line of peace, friendship, cooperation and sustainable development.
Major cooperative mechanisms between the two countries, such as joint committees and conferences of bordering provinces have proved efficient. The two sides have also attached special attention to developing cooperation in such fields as education and training, energy, healthcare and transport.
Vietnam and Cambodia have also accelerated cooperation in regional and international cooperation frameworks such as the United Nations, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, the Asia-Europe Meeting, the Mekong Sub-region, the East-West Economic Corridor (EWEC), and the Cambodia–Laos–Vietnam development triangle.
The Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong’s visit to Cambodia aims to affirm Vietnam’s consistent policy and priority on consolidating and enhancing its relations with Cambodia and the CPP, and to deepen the stable and sustainable bilateral ties.
May Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong’s visit be a success, helping to reach a new height in Vietnam-Cambodia relations following the motto "good neighbours, traditional friendship, comprehensive cooperation and long-term sustainability", for the interest of each country’s people, contributing to peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region and the world at large.
