NDO—National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan advised Dien Bien province to promote its strengths and linkages with neighbouring provinces to develop tourism while working with the provincial leaders on March 13.

She pointed out several assets that the northern mountainous province should focus on to attract tourists, including the Dien Bien Phu Battlefield Relics Complex; the diverse cultural identities of nineteen ethnic groups; and the beauty of the ban flower, scientifically known as Bauhinia variegata, among others.

The province was also told to call on investors in the form of the BOT and BT model to develop its infrastructure in support of tourism and economic development.

According to Secretary of the Dien Bien Province Party Committee Tran Van Son, the province is actively restructuring its agricultural sector to enhance the value of its farm produce.

The province recorded a total budget revenue of over VND1 trillion (US$44 million) in 2016, exceeding the estimate by 10.8%, which was the first year that the province posted over VND1 trillion in budget revenue.

The NA Chairwoman also asked Dien Bien to focus on developing agricultural and forestry along with forest protection.

However, Dien Bien still has a high rate of poverty, so it should promote poverty reduction programmes, the building of new-style rural areas and the implementation of national target programmes, NA Chairman Ngan added.

Meanwhile, the province raised many issues to be settled, including the Government’s policy of support for investors in the province; supplementary funding for the programme of building new-style rural areas for ethnic minority people; the upgrade of Dien Bien Phu Airport; and additional funding for the Son La Hydroelectric Plant's resettlement project, among others.
