NDO – Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc on March 15 in Long Xuyen city, An Giang province, chaired a conference discussing measures for sustainable development of Vietnam's rice industry in the Mekong River Delta region.
The conference aimed to help experts and localities to understand the situation and needy issues for the development, directions and measures for sustainable development of rice industry, one of the strategic export commodities.
Addressing the conference, PM Phuc appreciated the results that the Mekong River Delta provinces, enterprises, ministries and agencies as well as farmers in the region have gained in developing rice production over the past years.
He emphasised that the rice industry in the Mekong River Delta should continue to affirm its important role in the Vietnamese agricultural sector.
It is very essential to promote large-scale production, in association with a deep restructuring of processing and production, added the Government leader.
He also noted that in order to cope with changes of environment and challenges from climate change, rice production should be combined with farming models, including shrimp and fish.
The PM asked relevant agencies to create a new vision and strategic plans in line with the trend of globalisation, bringing the best value for rice growers in the new period.
PM Phuc asked scientists, managers and enterprises to frankly offer ideas to build brands for Vietnamese rice and sustainably develop rice commodities.
He stressed the importance of the analysis of market’s demand as well as application of scientific and technological advances in rice production.
The Government leader asked the delegates to propose measures to combat corruption in the rice industry as well as remove regulations and institutions causing difficulties and congestion for rice production.
In addition, he suggested that it is essential to offer medium and long-term capital at acceptable interest rates for rice processors and exporters.
According to statistics, 90% of the country’s exported rice was from the Mekong River Delta, being present in 150 markets around the world, including China, Malaysia and the Philippines.
