NDO - Nguyen Thien Nhan has been appointed to head the Party committee of Ho Chi Minh City, replacing Dinh La Thang, who was disciplined for his misconduct as chairman of a State-owned company.
Nhan, President of the Vietnamese Fatherland Front, took office on May 10 after receiving the Politburo’s decision from National Assembly Chair, Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan.
In his inaugural speech, Nhan thanked for the trust of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and the Politburo, vowing to do his best and continue what generations of HCMC leaders have been doing and in a better way.
Meanwhile, Thang has been transferred to the Central Economic Commission as one of its deputy heads.
Last week, he was disciplined by warning and removed from the Politburo for committing serious violations while running the National Oil and Gas Group, also known as PVN or PetroVietnam.
In the past, Nhan, born in 1953 in the southern province of Tra Vinh, had a long stint in Ho Chi Minh City with the highest position being vice-chairman of the municipal People’s Committee.
Nhan was appointed as Minister of Education and Training in 2006 and concurrently Deputy Prime Minister in 2007.
In May 2013, he was elected to the Politburo and appointed as President of the Vietnamese Fatherland Front in September of the same year.
