Memorial service held for deputy leader of Vietnam Buddhist Sangha

NDO/VNA – A memorial service was held at Lang Cat Pagoda in Rach Gia city, Kien Giang province, on September 1, in commemoration of Most Venerable Danh Nhuong – Deputy Supreme Patriarch of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS).
During the funeral days of the most venerable, also known as Agg Maha Saddhamma Jotika Dhaja Nanadhammo, nearly 500 delegations have paid homage to him and offered their condolences.
President Tran Dai Quang, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan and President of the Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) Central Committee Tran Thanh Man also sent wreaths in commemoration of the late monk.
On the afternoon of August 31, Deputy Prime Minister Truong Hoa Binh led a Government delegation to pay respect to the Most Venerable Danh Nhuong, who was also a member of the Presidium of the VFF Central Committee.
Danh Nhuong was born on June 7, 1929, in Minh Luong commune of Chau Thanh district, Kien Giang province and became a monk at the age of 16.
He passed away on August 26, 2017 at Lang Cat Pagoda.
During the war against the US, he took part in the revolutionary movement in Rach Gia township, leading tens of thousands of monks and Khmer Buddhist followers in Kien Giang in their struggle to end the war and reunify the nation.
After the south was liberated and the nation was reunified on April 30, 1975, the most venerable was elected to leadership positions in the VBS and the VFF Central Committee. He also served as a deputy in the National Assembly of the 11th and 12th tenures.
He devoted his entire life to Buddhism and the nation, greatly contributing to the development of the nation and the great national unity bloc.
In honour of Danh Nhuong’s dedication, the Vietnamese Party and State and the VFF Central Committee presented him with the Independence Order (first and second class), the Resistance Order (third class) and the “For the Cause of Great Unity” medal, along with many other noble rewards.
