NDO - Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc departed Hanoi on May 11 to attend the World Economic Forum on ASEAN (WEF-ASEAN) in Phnom Penh, which is an important political event to foster the relations between Vietnam, the WEF and Cambodia as well as in promoting the image of a country which has undergone comprehensive reforms and rapid international integration.

The Vietnamese PM was invited to the event by Cambodian PM Samdech Techo Hun Sen and WEF Executive Chairman Klaus Schwab.

This year's WEF-ASEAN conference takes place in the context of the 50th anniversary of ASEAN and the second year of building the ASEAN Community, marking a more dynamic and substantive stage of development.

The ASEAN Community with more than 630 million people and a total GDP of US$2.48 trillion has grown strongly and reaped many achievements, bringing about practical benefits for member countries and for the whole region.

Regarding external relations, ASEAN continues to assert its role as a nucleus of dialogue and co-operation for peace and stability in the region. Dialogue partners have affirmed their respect for the relations with ASEAN and support ASEAN in building the Community and playing a central role in the region while committing their support to ASEAN to jointly work out measures to effectively carry out common action plans.

During the process of Vietnam's participation in the association, the country has made many important contributions to ASEAN associated with the significant progress of ASEAN.

Vietnam and the WEF first established co-operational ties in 1989 and the relationship between the two sides has grown rapidly in many areas. The two sides have regularly maintained high-level visits and contacts to create a foundation for the development of bilateral relations.

In 2010, Vietnam successfully hosted the WEF on East Asia in Ho Chi Minh City, creating a good impression for leaders of governments and the business community throughout the world. In October 2016, Vietnam in co-ordination with the WEF organised the WEF on the Mekong region to promote the Mekong region to the international business community, which was an important mark in the Vietnam-WEF relationship appreciated by the business community in the region.

In 2018, Vietnam will host the WEF-ASEAN Conference which continues to mark a new development in the relationship between the WEF and Vietnam as well as the active integration of Vietnam in the region and the world.

Themed ‘Youth, Technology and Growth: Securing ASEAN's Digital and Demographic Dividends,’ the WEF-ASEAN 2017 Conference in Phnom Penh has a busy agenda focusing on valuating the development and integration process of ASEAN and raising issues for the next phase of development of ASEAN.

Accordingly, the Conference will discuss many issues reflecting the interest of the business community in ASEAN including the positioning of ASEAN in the new geopolitical and world economic context; prospects of the ASEAN Economic Community; impacts of the fourth industrial revolution on ASEAN countries in the fields of education, labour, competitiveness and digital economy; and equal development in ASEAN; among others.

PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc's visit to Cambodia will continue to convey the message of the Vietnamese Government on improving the business and investment environment and the Government's efforts to strengthen the confidence of international enterprises in relation to the Vietnamese economy.
