NDO – Vice Chairman of Hanoi city People’s Committee Le Hong Son has stressed that as a founding member of the World Peace Council (WPC), Vietnam has been consistent in its support of the peace movements in developing countries.

The Hanoi city leader made the affirmation at a meeting in Hanoi on November 23 with an international delegation attending the Congress of the WPC Executive Committee.

He briefed the guests on Vietnam’s practical actions to maintain world peace, including launching a signature petition which supports the 1951 Stockholm Appeal for an absolute ban on nuclear weapons, and joining the movement calling for the end of the Korean War (1950-1953) and the reunification of the North and the South.

Vietnam has also hosted seminars, signature petitions and walks for peace in order to raise Vietnamese people’s awareness on peace, he added.

On behalf of the international guest, Ilda Figueiredo, member of the WPC Executive Committee and President of the Portuguese Council for Peace and Cooperation, expressed her thanks to the warm welcome of the Hanoi city authorities for the delegation.

She stressed that Vietnam is an exemplary country where people have bravely fought for the independence of their motherland.

The WPC highly appreciates and places trust in Vietnam for its further support and contributions to peace movements around the world, she emphasised.
