NDO – President Tran Dai Quang has welcomed the initiatives proposed by President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Gabriela Cuevas Barron, in organising conferences on the e-parliament and women parliamentarians in Vietnam, expressing his hopes that both sides would continue cooperating effectively in order to make these noble ideas come to fruition.

The State leader made the remark while hosting a reception for the IPU chief and a high-level delegation of the IPU, on January 19, who are now in Hanoi for the 26th Annual Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Parliamentary Forum (APPF-26).

Welcoming the guests to Hanoi for the APPF-26, he congratulated Cuevas Barron on her election as the IPU President, whilst speaking highly of the significant contributions made by former IPU President Saber Chowdhury and IPU Secretary-General Martin Chungong to deepening the relations between the IPU and the Vietnamese National Assembly (NA).

President Quang informed the guests that the Vietnamese State has decided to present the Friendship Order to Chowdhury and Chungong, in recognition of their contributions to the Vietnam-IPU relations, as well as their warm sentiments towards Vietnam.

He emphasised that the APPF-26 is the most important political and parliamentary diplomacy event of Vietnam in 2018, and is also a continuation of the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting, which was successfully held in the central coastal city of Da Nang in November 2017.

The State leader attributed Vietnam’s significant achievements in 2017 to the effective support from international friends and organisations, including the IPU and regional inter-parliamentary organisations, affirming that the presence of IPU President Cuevas Barron, former IPU President Chowdhury and IPU Secretary-General Chungong at the APPF-26 reflects the IPU’s special sentiments and support for the Vietnamese NA and people, contributing significantly to enhancing the Vietnamese parliament’s position in the region and the world.

For her part, IPU President Cuevas Barron congratulated Vietnam on its amazing achievements, stating that Vietnam has impressed the IPU member parliaments through the successful organisation of the 132nd IPU Assembly (IPU-132) in March 2015, alongside the success of the APEC Year 2017.

Lauding the extensive cooperative relations between the IPU and the Vietnamese NA at present, Barron expressed her wish to boost the collaboration with the Vietnamese NA so that she could successfully perform her tasks as the IPU chief.

At the reception, IPU President Cuevas Barron also introduced her ideas concerning the organisation of conferences on e-parliament and women parliamentarians in Vietnam.
