NDO - It is imperative to raise awareness in relation to climate change and measures to cope with its impacts among all ministries, agencies, the entire political system and people.
The remark was made by Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc at the eighth session of the National Committee on Climate Change (NCCC) in Hanoi on May 18. The event was also attended by Deputy PM Trinh Dinh Dung.
Addressing the session, the Government leader asked the NCCC to change the operating methods, particularly raising the number of experts with high professional skills for its Advisory Board.
The NCCC should also point out the risks and opportunities of climate change in the country as well as set out master plans for building and developing necessary tasks, especially dealing with urgent matters such as illegal sand mining, underground water exploitation and the development of urban ecology, added PM Phuc.
In addition, it is essential to strengthen the communication and education of impacts of climate change as well as enhance people’s experience in coping with climate change, said the PM.
He urged the Committee to complete the legal framework on climate change, including the amendment and supplementation of some existing laws.
PM Phuc also noted that the NCC should enhance the international cooperation in order to mobilise the official development assistance (ODA) as well as draw lessons on climate change adaptation from foreign countries.
He stressed the urgency of researching and adjusting the master plans, particularly in the Mekong River Delta and Central Coastal regions.
The PM asked the Ministry of Planning and Investment to coordinate with relevant agencies to soon openly and transparently allocate resources and capital for climate change adaptation, focusing on the Mekong Delta River.
Regarding tasks for the remaining months of this year, the PM asked ministries, agencies and localities to develop specific plans to implement the assigned tasks under the COP 21 Paris Agreement.
