NDO - Vietnam’s adoption of the Internet’s latest addressing scheme, known as IPv6, reached 25.85% as of December 2018, ranking 13th in the world and 6th in Asia-Pacific.

Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Pham Hong Hai said on March 5 that Vietnam is the second fastest adopter of IPv6 in ASEAN with 14 million users.

IPv4, the previous addressing system, has run out of its nearly 4.3 billion addresses and is being replaced by IPv6, whose address pool is effectively inexhaustible.

Vietnam has determined the conversion to IPv6 as an essential preparatory step for the application of new technologies such as Internet of Things.

According to Hai, 5.2 million new fibre optic customers were provided with IPv6 addresses by Viettel and VNPT in 2018, adding to the 1.3 million customers that FPT Telecom already switched to the technology since 2016.

Last year also saw 2.7 million mobile users of Vinaphone and Viettel provided with IPv6 addresses.

Vietnam currently has nearly 6,000 websites with the domain name “.vn” that have their IPv6 addresses activated and are running well.

Vietnam aims to raise its IPv6 adoption to 30% by the end of 2019.
