NDO – The Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST) should focus on improving four main issues as well as creating three breakthroughs during the 2018-2020 period.
The statement was made by Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc while attending a conference in Hanoi on January 9 to review the science and technology sector’s performance in 2017 and devise tasks for 2018.
The event also saw the presence of Deputy PM Vu Duc Dam.
Speaking at the conference, PM Phuc appreciated the achievements made by the sector in the past year, significantly contributing to the country’s development.
He also pointed out the shortcomings that need to be remedied in the time ahead, such as the slow development of the science and technology market in Vietnam and the limitation of the application of scientific and technological results in production and business activities.
He urged the MoST to pay great attention to enhancing innovation, breakthroughs, adaptation and sustainability in its strategy, closely following the Government’s action plan.
The Government leader emphasised four issues that the science and technology sector should improve: its contribution to economic growth model transformation, particularly the low-productivity models in agriculture; further promotion of creative innovation and starts-up; support for enterprises to apply technology; and the improvement of productivity, quality of labour forces and the efficiency of production and business.
He noted that the sector needs to create three breakthroughs in institutions and policies; investment methods and ordering mechanisms for science and technology; and investment for applied research and directions for application.
On the occasion, PM Phuc presented the Independence Orders, first and third classes, to former Ministers of Science and Technology Hoang Van Phong (2002-2011 period) and Nguyen Quan (2011-2016), respectively.
Deputy PM Vu Duc Dam also awarded Labour Orders to the leaders and officials of the ministry.
