NDO – The University of Science, under the Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU), has become the first Vietnamese university to meet with the ASEAN University Network-Quality Assurance (AUN-QA) standards.

As announced by the university on November 20, they have already received a notification from the Executive Director of the AUN in regards to the organisation’s official recognition over the Vietnamese institution.

Earlier from January 15 to 20, the AUN-QA assessment at institutional level was conducted over the VNU University of Science, making it the first university in Southeast Asia to experience quality evaluation following this set of standards.

Talking about the significant achievement, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Noi, Rector of the VNU University of Science, hailed it as a result of the righteousness and close directions of the leaders at all levels, along with the active and effective efforts made by the university’s units, officials and learners.

The AUN-QA recognition marks an important milestone en route to developing the VNU University of Science into an advanced research university in the future, he emphasised.

During the period of 2012-2015, the VNU University of Science had six training programmes placed under the AUN’s quality assessment following the AUN-QA standards, including bachelor’s degree programmes in the majors of chemistry, biology, mathematics, physics, geology and environmental science. Of these, the chemistry and geology programmes were marked five points, the second highest in the Southeast Asian region.

As scheduled, the university will continue to receive the AUN’s assessment team to inspect the quality for its bachelor’s degree programmes in the two majors of physical geography and meteorology, from November 21 to 23.

The AUN made its debut in 1995 serving the goal of developing human resources via higher education in the ASEAN region. The AUN Quality Assurance (AUN-QA) framework, with 25 standards and 111 criteria, is a destination towards which many universities in Vietnam and Southeast Asia are aiming. The inspection aims to comprehensively strengthen the quality of education, research and services, whilst evaluating the efficiency of the internal quality assurance system.

Currently, the VNU University of Science is working hard on the goal of high-level and high-quality training, striving to become a research university on par with advanced research universities in the Southeast Asian region. The university now has nearly 10,000 students and learners, operating 40 training programmes at the higher education level, including many strategic ones.
