Floods, landslides cause damage in localities

NDO - Flash floods and heavy rains in Tuyen Quang, Nghe An, An Giang, and Ca Mau provinces in recent days have caused serious damage to property and destruction of crops.

A storm and heavy rains, which swept through communes in Chiem Hoa district, Tuyen Quang from May 14-15, resulted in 10 houses collapsing and severely damaging two bridges. Nearly 50 hectares of rice, sugarcane, and other cultivated crops were desroyed. Total losses were estimated at over VND2 billion.

According to the Centre for Flood and Storm Prevention in the central province of Nghe An, heavy rains had left 91 houses flooded. Nearly 60ha of rice and farm products were submerged under water. More than 15 irrigation works collapsed, nearly 3,000 cubic metres of road was damaged and 2,000 birds were estimated to have died. The total loss was estimated at over VND6.5 billion.

A number of delegations from the Centre for Flood and Storm Prevention have been sent to the localities to join local authorities to cope with heavy rain and take urgent measures to prevent landslides.

Local authorities in the provinces have directed functional agencies to provide assistance to residents in order to overcome the consequences of the severe weather.
