BRT line project in HCMC suspended

NDO – The Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee has decided to suspend its plans to build the city’s first bus rapid transit system (BRT) after being informed by the transport department that the project might cause more harm than good.
Earlier, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee had assigned UCCI as the main investor for the city’s first BRT route, which would have run for a total of 23 kilometers through districts 1, 2, 5, 6, 8, Binh Tan and Binh Chanh, with total investment capital of US$144 million.
However, according to the Ho Chi Minh City municipal transport department, only 17,700 passengers would use the BRT route from Vo Van Kiet and Mai Chi Tho boulevards rather than the 24,700 passengers previously projected by the city’s government.
This figure is not that much higher than the number of people who already use conventional buses, and even lower on some routes, while the BRT would cost an estimated US$144 million.
Therefore, if the city opens high-quality bus routes then it does not need to invest in an intelligent transportation system, or improve the dedicated lanes throughout the route, or invest in ticket control equipment, waiting rooms, and BRT vehicles.
For these reasons, at the recent meeting with the Department of Transport and investors, Vice Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City's People Committee Tran Vinh Tuyen agreed to deploy the high-quality bus routes project instead of the BRT project.
