Bac Kan urged to promote potentials for socio-economic development

NDO – The northern mountainous province of Bac Kan should tap into its potential and advantages on land, climate and especially forests to facilitate local socio-economic prospect with right policies.

The Politburo member and National Assembly (NA) Chairwoman, Tong Thi Phong, made the suggestion during her working session with local authorities on November 12.

Reporting to the NA leader on local socio-economic situation, Bac Kan leaders said that in 2017, the provincial socio-economic situation continues to witness positive changes with economic growth rate in 2017 estimated at 5.1%; per capita income at over VND26 million, up 1.2 million compared to 2016.

Total grain production in 2017 is estimated at nearly 183,000 tonnes, reaching 104% of the plan. Total forest planted area for the year is at 7,229 6,400 ha, reaching 113% of the plan. The forest coverage rate remains at over 71.4%.

The number of poor households in the province is at 20,810/78,201 households, accounting for 26.61%; and 10,118 near poor households, accounting for 12.94%. In 2017, the rate of poor households is expected to decrease by 2-2.5%.

Investment promotional activities in the province continue to be given attention. Bac Kan provincial People's Committee has approved investment for 11 projects with total registered capital of over VND780 billion. Currently, the province is cooperating with the Vietnam Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Industry and Trade to prepare a Bac Kan investment promotion conference in cooperation with a regional tourism promotion programme in 2017.

At the meeting, leaders of the Bac Kan asked the NA to provide more favourable conditions to facilitate investment resources from ODA and government bonds for key projects on transport infrastructure, such as the National Highway No. 3’s Cho Moi-Bac Kan city section and Quan Binh-Ba Be Lake Road to attract investment into the province.

Vice Chairwoman Phong suggested Bac Kan continue to seek ways to remove difficulties by mobilising social resources, together with the State to focus investment in transport infrastructure development to create a motive force for socio-economic development and connect with neighbouring provinces in the whole region in order to jointly develop in an efficient and sustainable manner.

On the occasion, Phong presented gifts to several outstanding families in the province.

Later the same day, Phong and her NA delegation visited the dam construction site at Nam Cat Lake, Duong Quang commune, Bac Kan city.
