Storm Sanba weakens into tropical depression

NDO – Storm Sanba, which was previously forecast to make landfall in Vietnam during the traditional Lunar New Year (Tet), has weakened into a tropical depression after passing through the southern Philippines in the early hours of February 14.

According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting (NCHMF), at 7 am on Wednesday morning, the tropical low pressure was positioned at about 9.0 degrees north latitude, 120.5 degrees east latitude, about 230 km east of Palawan (the Philippines). The strongest wind near the centre of the tropical low-pressure system was at 50-60 kph.

It is forecast that in the next 24 hours, the tropical depression will move westward at a speed of 15-20 kph. On Tuesday morning, it will be approximately 500 km east-northeast of Vietnam’s Truong Sa Island (under Truong Sa Archipelago), with winds estimated 40-50 kph.

In the subsequent 24 to 48 hours, the tropical depression will move westward at 15 kph and continue to weaken.

The national meteorological agency has predicted a warm Tet for northern provinces as the cold spell weakens from February 13.

In Hanoi, the temperature on February 16 - the first day of the Lunar New Year - is expected to reach 23 degrees Celsius, with cloudy yet warm weather forecast. For the first four days of the new year it will be warm in Hanoi, with an expected maximum temperature of 26 degrees Celsius and minimum temperature of 15 degrees Celsius. However, February 20, the fifth day of the new year, will be cooler.

Ho Chi Minh City and other southern provinces are expected to be warmer during Tet, with a temperature of some 30 degrees Celsius.

In central Da Nang City, the first four days of the new year will be pleasant, with a temperature of some 25-28 degrees Celsius. Rain is predicted on the fifth day and the temperature will drop to 20-23 degrees Celsius.
