Nhan Dan - A national meeting in response to World Ocean Day (June 8) and Vietnam Sea and Islands week (June 1-8) was held yesterday in Nha Trang city, in the central province of Khanh Hoa.

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and representatives of central and local authorities attended the event, which was held jointly by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, the Khanh Hoa provincial People's Committee and the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union Central Committee.

Vietnam Sea and Islands Week is an annual activity to raise public awareness of the function, role and special significance of seas and oceans. Under the theme ‘Green Brainpower for Sustainable Development of Vietnam’s Sea and Islands,’ this year's event is also designed to improve the protection of natural resources and the maritime environment as well as enhance Vietnamese national pride in the sovereignty over territorial waters and the long-term development of the sea-based economy.

Addressing the meeting, Prime Minister Dung emphasised that sea and islands have held a very important position in the country's socio-economic development, security and defense. Resources from the sea have contributed significantly to the development of the country for years, accounting for 48% of its gross domestic product (GDP).

Prime Minister Dung also mentioned several critical challenges Vietnam is facing in protecting its sea and islands and exploiting natural resources, as well as the declining fish resources, biodiversity, marine ecosystems and the pollution of the marine environment.

The PM urged localities and relevant agencies to continue implementing key tasks related to the sea and islands.

Also at the meeting, eight individuals and 13 organisations were praised for their outstanding contributions to protecting sustainable marine resources and the environment.

The same day, meetings in response to World Ocean Day and Vietnam Sea and Islands Week were also held in the northern province of Quang Ninh and the central province of Phu Yen. After the meetings, thousands of people from all walks of life participated in activities to clean up the environment and collect rubbish in Ha Long Bay and on Tuy Hoa beach.
