Hanoi-based tour operator Vietravel launched a public appeal for financial support for fishermen in the Hoang Sa (Paracel) and Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelagoes on July 19.
The move comes in response to a programme called, ‘Fishing nets for Hoang Sa and Truong Sa fishermen,’ which is jointly organised by the Golden Heart Fund of Lao Dong (Labour) newspaper and the Vietnam General Confederation of Labour.
The appeal will run until August 2 in all the operator’s northern agencies, and is expected to draw as many as 5,000 donations, which will be made via text message. Those who book Vietravel tours will be exempt from texting fees.
In the near future, the drive will be promoted in all Vietravel agencies across the nation.
A similar drive raised a total of VND2.93 billion (US$130,000) for 13 fishermen in Quang Ngai province, helping them to continue their job at sea.
This year, the fund hopes to raise VND10 billion (US$400,000) in order to buy life insurance for 10,000 fishermen and boat insurance for hundreds.
Vietravel has been active in charity activities, joining several campaigns to present blankets and clothes to children in the northern mountainous region, and to offer free eye surgery to those in need.
