Nhan Dan – A delegation from Ho Chi Minh City headed by Party Secretary Le Thanh Hai travelled to Ly Son island yesterday to provide funds to local fishermen.

During a meeting with Ly Son authorities, Hai was briefed on the island’s socio-economic development, especially within the fishing industry.

Ly Son currently boasts 427 fishing vessels, which mainly operate on the waters of the Hoang Sa (Paracel) and Truong Sa (Spratly) Islands.

Revenue from the fishing industry reached VND241 billion (US$11.3 million) in 2012 and VND153 billion (US$7.2 million) in the first half of 2013.

Ly Son has established two fishing syndicates which unite fishermen and offer assistance in case of natural disaster or threats from foreign vessels.

Speaking with Ly Son fisherman, Secretary Hai expressed the delight and pride of the homeland for the Hoang Sa fleet.

He added that the fishermen's presence on the sea is not only to earn a living, but also to affirm the sovereignty of Vietnam over its waters and islands.

Hai then presented VND2 billion (US$94,000) to Ly Son fishermen to help them repair their vessels and buy new fishing equipment.
