NDO – Vietnamese grandmaster Le Quang Liem continued to maintain his place among the leading group en route to the title at the 2017 HDBank International Chess Tournament after the eighth round concluded on the night of March 16.

Liem recorded two consecutive draws on Thursday against Chinese Bu Xiangzhi (Round 7) and Wei Yi (Round 8), which secured him a place in the leading group of five players with six points.

The Vietnamese star is currently in third position with better auxiliaries than top seed Wei Yi and S. Bogdanovic of Ukraine, just behind reigning champion Wang Hao and Bu Xiangzhi.

Hanoi player Tran Tuan Minh tied with I. Eduardo of Venezuela and I. Rozum of Russia in the seventh and eighth rounds of play to rank sixth with 5.5 points.

In the last match today, Liem (Elo 2,712) will face lower rated player Bogdanovic (Elo 2,602). A victory will secure Liem the overall title if the matches Wei Yi - Bu Xiangzhi and I. Cheparinov - Wang Hao both end in draws.

The annual tournament is taking place from March 12 to 17, with over 230 chess masters from across the world competing in the two divisions of Masters (for top players) and Challengers (for players rated below 2,100).

A total of US$45,000 in prize money is up for grabs, with the first prize winner receiving US$13,000.
