A late match on Sunday saw third place Quang Ninh Coal defeated by hosts Hoang Anh Gia Lai at Pleiku Stadium. Despite having to play away, Quang Ninh were still more highly rated than the home team who are unstable and have been up and down in the middle of the table.

However, contrary to the assessment, the Gia Lai players forced the visitors onto the back foot in the first ten minutes of the first half. After the initial minutes, Quang Ninh gradually got back into the game, deploying a range of dangerous attacks, thanks to breakthroughs by Russian-born striker Dyachenko.

While Quang Ninh were trying to increase the pressure on home goalkeeper To Vinh Loi they suddenly conceded a goal from distance by the newly-signed, foreign player Motta in the 24th minute. In the 39th minute, Chau Ngoc Quang increased the score to 2-0 for the home team with a skillful lob.

The 2-0 lead helped Gia Lai to slow down the speed of the game and strengthen their defence in the second half, but they still made good use of counterattack opportunities. In the 52nd minute, Chau Ngoc Quang again beat the defensive line of Quang Ninh and scored the third goal for Gia Lai.

With nothing to lose, the visitors bombarded the Gia Lai goal and narrowed the score to 1-3 when Dyachenko converted a penalty kick in the 73rd minute. Six minutes later, Mac Hong Quan’s header made the score 2-3 for Quang Ninh Coal. However, in the 85th minute, Thanh Tung ended the visitors’ hope when he successfully finished a penalty kick to make it 4-2 for Gia Lai.

* In contrast to Quang Ninh, in another game held at the same time at Vinh Stadium, second-place Hanoi FC defeated hosts Song Lam Nghe An 2-1 to consolidate their ranking. Despite the absence of a number of key players, the team from the capital city entered the game with confidence, while hosts Song Lam Nghe An were also intent on not losing points at home.

The match was engaging, played at a high tempo from the start, and the score was quickly opened in the 21st minute for the visitors. With the opening goal in hand, the Hanoi players played excitedly and less than seven minutes later, they widened the gap to 2-0. At the end of the first half, the home team were fortunate to reduce the score to 1-2, but they failed to turn any of their opportunities into goals during the second half.

* Also on Sunday, Sanna Khanh Hoa BVN narrowly won 1-0 against guests Ho Chi Minh City and was the fourth victory for the coastal city team this season. In two late games on the same day, at Long An and Thong Nhat Stadiums, Long An lost to Quang Nam 2-3, while hosts Sai Gon FC won 2-1 against table toppers FLC Thanh Hoa.

* Earlier on Saturday, Hai Phong were beaten by visitors Becamex Binh Duong 0-2, while SHB Da Nang beat Can Tho with a 3-0 result.

After 17 matches, Hanoi FC continue to hold onto second place in the table with 31 points, 2 points behind leader FLC Thanh Hoa. Meanwhile, dropping points on their home field, Song Lam Nghe An now have just 17 points and lost tenth place to Hoang Anh Gia Lai with 20 points.
