NDO – Le Quang Liem and Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son finished triumphant in the men’s rapid chess team final on the night of September 26, bringing home the 12th gold medal for Vietnam at the ongoing fifth Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games (AIMAG 2017) in Turkmenistan.

The semifinal round saw the Vietnamese duo outplay their host opponents with a score of 2-1. Both Liem and Son tied with their opponents in the first two games, and it was Quang Liem who beat A. Meilis in the third decisive game to secure Vietnam a place in the final of the competition against competitors from China.

The Chinese team was considered on a par with the Vietnamese team, owing to the presence of Li Chao and Wang Yue – two strong players in the world chess circle in the rapid category.

However, the brilliance of Liem, together with the stable form of Son, helped to seal an overall 1.5-0.5 victory for Vietnam. Liem took advantage of playing white to beat Wang Yue, while Son held Li Chao to a draw in impressive fashion.

This is the second gold medal won by the Vietnamese chess masters at the AIMAG 2017, with Quang Liem contributing to both. Earlier, the Ho Chi Minh City-born player was crowned champion in the men’s standard chess event.

Alongside the men’s rapid team title, Vietnam have also won two more bronze medals in the women’s team rapid event and the women’s U-23 team rapid category.

As of the night of September 26, Vietnam remained in eighth position in the standings with 12 gold medals.
