NDO – The rapid chess competition of the World Youth U14, U16, U18 Rapid & Blitz Chess Championships 2017 concluded in Greece, on the evening of October 29 (local time), with Ngo Duc Tri and Nguyen Anh Khoi sealing two gold medals for Vietnam in spectacular style.
In the boys’ U14 category, Hanoi-born player, Ngo Duc Tri, took the top honour with 7.5 points after nine matches.
Tri, 13, won the opening game but then lost the second match. However, he managed to score five successive victories later on, before playing out a draw in the eighth match and claiming the decisive ninth clash for the overall title.
This is the best world-level result ever achieved by Duc Tri, a promising chess player of Hanoi and Vietnam.
With regards to the boys’ U16 category, Nguyen Anh Khoi was crowned champion in an exceptional fashion despite being just the no. 5 seed.
The Vietnamese chess prodigy finished victorious in all of his first eight matches, including a win over the top seed, Gungl Theo of Germany. Khoi did not have to play the ninth game and won an additional point as a result, thereby winning the trophy with a maximum of nine points.
This is the third time that Anh Khoi has been crowned at a world-level competition, following his previous world U10 and U12 standard chess titles.
In addition to the two gold medals won by Duc Tri and Anh Khoi, Vietnam also won a silver medal thanks to Nguyen Hong Ngoc, who scored five points after nine rounds in the girls’ U18 category.
