Tennis: Hoang Nam, Van Phuong crowned champions at Vietnam F2 Futures

The Vietnamese duo made a dramatic comeback to win the men’s doubles title.

NDO – Vietnamese duo Ly Hoang Nam and Nguyen Van Phuong beat Wong Chun Hun - Yeung Pak Long from Hong Kong (China) 2-1 to win the men’s doubles final at the Vietnam F2 Futures tennis tournament, on May 12.

Wong Chun Hun - Yeung Pak Long had previously defeated Ly Hoang Nam - Le Quoc Khanh in the men's doubles final at the Vietnam F1 Futures a week ago. They were therefore expected to cause difficulties for the native Binh Duong duo. However, by pursuing persistence and showing effectiveness in the decisive moments, the host duo retained the championship trophy after a dramatic comeback.

Hoang Nam - Van Phuong did not start well in the 1st set. In contrast, the pair from Hong Kong, who have competed in a range of major tournaments under the ATP system, proved to be very experienced. Earning a break point in the fourth game, Pak Long and Chun Hun won the first set at 6-3.

Wong Chun Hun and Yeung Pak Long, Hong Kong (China) took the lead after the first set.

In the 2nd set, cheered on by the home fans at An Cuu court in Hue city, Nam and Phuong played well and completely overwhelmed their opponents. Breaking in the fourth game, Hoang Nam and Van Phuong advanced to a 6-3 victory, which pushed the game into a super tie-break.

In the nail-biting series, both sides were determined to win points, Hoang Nam - Van Phuong led 2-0, and then conceded 2-4, before finally overcoming the deficit to win 10-8.

To conclude, Hoang Nam and Van Phuong defeated the Hong Kong pair 2-1 to claim the trophy for hosts Vietnam at the tournament. This is also the first ATP title for Van Phuong.
