NDO – The only goal, scored by U23 national team player Nguyen Quang Hai, in the second half helped Hanoi FC to win three important points against defending champions Quang Nam in the late match in the 2018 V.League 1 Round 12 on June 9, thus consolidating their lead at the top of the table.

The other two remaining matches of Round 12 also saw Quang Ninh Coal and Saigon FC enjoy victories against Hoang Anh Gia Lai and Song Lam Nghe An, respectively.

Despite playing away from home, the table leaders Hanoi are in great form and took advantage as hosts Quang Nam could not field their strongest squad, as their top two strikers Claudecir and Ha Minh Tuan were unavailable.

Hanoi also suffered a slight disadvantage as the league’s current top scorer Osani Ganiyu had to sit out due to suspension; however, the team from the capital city had a quality replacement instead.

Aware of their difficulties, Quang Nam actively played defensively, while Hanoi put pressure on the hosts immediately after the first whistle. The most remarkable highlight of the first half belonged to coach Chu Dinh Nghiem’s side as Van Hau’s technical free kick in the 17th minute forced host goalie Van Cuong to make a save.

During the first 45 minutes, Hanoi could not break the deadlock against Quang Nam’s determined and focused defensive line, while, the home team barely tested goalkeeper Van Cong. The first half ended with a 0-0 draw.

The match continued in the same vein after the break as Hanoi maintained their pressure on the home team, while coach Hoang Van Phuc’s players seemed to want a goalless draw against an opponent in extremely good form.

However, Quang Nam could only keep Hanoi out until the 75th minute as midfielder Quang Hai was arrived in the box to net in the empty net after teammate Van Kien’s effort, opening the scoring for the guests.

The hosts were forced to strengthen their attacks in search of an equaliser, but on an unlucky day the Nigeria-born Nguyen Trung Dai Duong missed the best chance in the 84th minute as he shoot over the bar in Hanoi’s penalty area. The 1-0 lead was also the final result of the match.

The narrow win helps Hanoi strengthen their top spot in the table with 32 points, while Quang Nam rank seventh with 16 points after 12 matches played.

In the other matches the same day, second place Quang Ninh Coal won a convincing 3-0 victory over Hoang Anh Gia Lai, while Saigon earned their first three points after six consecutive matches without a win, with a 2-1 victory against guests Song Lam Nghe An.
