NDO – Despite being reduced to ten men after eight minutes, Song Lam Nghe An managed to edge past Thanh Hoa FC 1-0 in their V.League matchday 5 clash at Vinh Stadium, April 14.

Playing host to a Thanh Hoa side that is falling into crisis this season with only two points after four games, Nghe An manager Nguyen Duc Thang was confident towards the full three points against the reigning runners-up.

However, Song Lam Nghe An’s victorious ambition was dealt a big blow, as foreign striker Alves Marcio was sent off for fouling Dinh Tien Thanh just a few minutes into the match.

Regardless of such a big advantage, out-of-form Thanh Hoa played in deadlock and failed to create any noticeable opportunities in the following minutes.

Three minutes before the half hour mark, Thanh Hoa FC’s Xuan Cuong infringed Dinh Hoang in the box, gifting Song Lam Nghe An a penalty. From the spot, Khac Ngoc easily beat the Thanh Hoa keeper to put his team in front.

The guests came close to equalising the score early in the second half as Bui Van Hieu delivered a right-wing cross into the penalty area, but unmarked Gramoz’s header unexpectedly went wide. Van Hieu produced another threat in the 54th minute with a long-range powerful strike that was parried by goalie Nguyen Manh.

With time running out, Nguyen Manh rescued the home side again by punching Trong Hung’s 64th-minute freekick. Meanwhile, Song Lam Nghe An threatened to double their lead 15 minutes later, as Olaha skewed a volley at the crossbar.

The narrow triumph lifted Song Lam Nghe An to fourth in the table with 10 points, three points behind leaders Ho Chi Minh City and one below second-placed Hanoi FC.

As for Thanh Hoa FC, the third loss of the season kept them rooted to the bottom with just two points after five games, a senario that few had anticipated before the 2019 V.League commenced.

In other matches, Hai Phong FC and Saigon FC played out respective 1-1 with SHB Da Nang and Quang Nam FC.
