NDO – Swiss leisure airline Edelweiss Air under Switzerland’s national flag carrier SWISS announced the opening of direct flights between Ho Chi Minh City and Zurich on May 30.

This is the first direct flight between Vietnam and Switzerland, helping to shorten travel times and stimulate demand for tourism and trade between two destinations.

As part of its flight expansion plan for Asia, the first direct flight between Vietnam’s southern economic hub and the largest city in Switzerland will begin in mid-November, with twice weekly flights. Some airline ticket agents have already accepted bookings for the flights and the airline is preparing to put the tickets on its online ticketing system.

This direct flight will depart on Mondays and Thursdays from Zurich, and Tuesdays and Fridays from HCM City, using Airbus A340-300 aircraft with a capacity of 314 passengers.

Bernd Bauer, Edelweiss Air CEO, said that Vietnam’s exciting holiday destinations have become increasingly popular in the Swiss community. In particular, Swiss tourists tend to spend more time and money than those from other countries. It is expected that the airlines will serve around 10,500 visitors per year from Switzerland to HCM City, contributing more than US$32 million in annual revenue.

The new route is expected to bring Vietnam closer to Swiss and European travelers, while offering many alternate routes from Zurich to other popular destinations via SWISS.

As the leading leisure airline in Switzerland, Edelweiss operates flights to 68 destinations in 33 countries, of which Vietnam is considered an increasingly popular destination for tourism with impressive economic growth and increased trade potential with Switzerland.

The airline is working with Vietnam’s travel businesses to build tours between the two countries on the direct flight. Edelweiss forecasts that by 2020, the growth rate of passengers on this direct flight will be around 10% per year.

According to the General Statistics Office of Vietnam, in the first five months of 2018, more than 16,500 Swiss visitors came to Vietnam, up 4.2% over the same period of last year. Switzerland is one of the markets with high spending and long stays when traveling to Vietnam.
