Vietnam, Cuba renew resolve to deepen ties

Vietnam and Cuba have renewed their determination to continue deepening their friendship, solidarity, brotherhood, trust and comprehensive co-operation in service of the respective countries’ nation-building and defence.

This was declared in a joint declaration issued during the official visit to Cuba from November 15-17 by State President Tran Dai Quang, his spouse and a high-ranking Party and State delegation of Vietnam. The two sides agreed on measures to ratchet up bilateral co-operation, especially in defence, trade, agriculture, science and technology, communications, radio and television broadcast, energy, telecommunication, medicine-pharmacy, biotechnology, construction, tourism, culture, sports, education and training.

Vietnamese President Tran Dai Quang attended a dialogue and a group meeting with the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation (APEC) Forum’s Business Advisory Council (APAC) within the framework of the 24th APEC High-level Week in Lima, Peru, on November 19.

The dialogue, co-chaired by President Tran Dai Quang, Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak, Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea Kim Byong-joon and US Trade Representative Michael Froman, took place following a ceremony hosted by Peruvian President Pedro Paplo Kuczynsky to welcome heads of delegations from 21 member economies.

Vietnamese President Tran Dai Quang had a busy day on November 19 (local time) hosting leaders of countries on the side lines of the 24th High-level Week of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Forum in Lima, Peru.

In the meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, the two leaders agreed that the Vietnam-China Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership has maintained positive progress over the past years. At the meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, the two leaders wished Vietnam and Russia would join hands to lay a solid foundation for the bilateral relationship in all fields from economic, trade and investment to education and security-defence. President Quang also met Chilean President Michelle Bachelet, Canadian Prime Minister Justine Trudeau, Papua New Guinea Prime Minister Peter O’Neill, Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, US President Barrack Obama, Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Brunei King Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, New Zealand Prime Minister John Key, and Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto.

Government announces action plan for 2016-2021 term

The Government for the new term has issued Resolution No. 100/NQ-CP, dated November 18, on publicising its programme for the next five years.

Accordingly, the document defined six main groups of tasks for the Government, including streamlining the Government’s organisational structure and building a team of staff, especially officials at the strategic level, with sufficient capacity and quality to meet the requirements of their positions. It calls for innovative solutions to renovate the growth model and improve its quality, while increasing labour productivity and the competitiveness of the economy.

Vietnamese Teachers’ Day marked nationwide

Nguyen Thien Nhan, Politburo member and President of the Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) Central Committee, visited the Ministry of Education and Training on November 18 to congratulate officials and public servants working in the education sector on the occasion of Vietnam Teachers’ Day, which falls on November 20.

On the occasion of the holiday, Minister of Education and Training Phung Xuan Nha sent his greetings and best wishes to teachers, officials and employees in the sector nationwide, especially those in disadvantaged and remote areas. Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam attended the opening of the new school year for 2016-2017 and the inauguration of an experimental zone at the College of Technology 2 in Ho Chi Minh City on November 18.

Construction has commenced on Ben Thanh station and a civil underground pass to the Opera House station in Ho Chi Minh City on November 17, under the contract package No.1a of the Metro Line No.1 project connecting Ben Thanh Market in District 1 with Suoi Tien Park in District 9.

The joint investors of the VND4.850 trillion (JPY25.6 billion) package deal are Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation from Japan and Civil Engineering Construction Coporation No.4 from Vietnam. Ben Thanh station consists of four underground floors, including B1 with 11,260 square metres and B2, B3 and B4 floors over a total of 6,785 square metres.

The 2016 Vietnam International Food Industry Exhibition (Vietnam Foodexpo 2016) opened at the Saigon Exhibition & Convention Centre in Ho Chi Minh City on November 16, gathering more than 400 companies from 30 Vietnamese localities and fifteen foreign countries and territories.

As the largest exhibition of Vietnam’s agricultural products, seafood and food industry, it is being held by the Ministry of Industry and Trade under the framework of the National Trade Promotion Programme. In addition to agricultural products, seafood, beverages, tea and coffee, spices and processed foods, the event also features food processing technologies.

Third International Experimental Theatre Festival closes

The third International Experimental Theatre Festival officially wrapped up in Hanoi on November 19. Gold medals were presented to three plays, including ‘The Seagull’ by Theatre Centre Without Walls/Theatre Company A La Place, Japan; ‘Ramayana’ by Henan Beijing Opera Troupe, China, and ‘Under the Sand is Water’ by the Army Drama Theatre, Vietnam.

In addition, 29 gold medals and 27 silver medals were also presented to the best performers at the awards ceremony. The festival offers an opportunity for Vietnamese artists to make exchanges and learn from the experiences of their international colleagues, thus enhancing their knowledge and qualifications.

Vietnamese weightlifters win 17 golds at regional youth championships

The Vietnamese weightlifting team has finished competing at the 2016 Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships in Tokyo, Japan, winning a total of seventeen gold, eight silver and five bronze medals.

According to head coach Huynh Huu Chi, on the team’s last day of competition last Sunday, Vietnamese weightlifters won another five gold medals, thanks to a gold from female weightlifter Tuyet Mai in the 63kg category, Nguyen Thi Van’s three golds in the 69kg category and Nguyen Quang Truong with two golds. Truong also won two silver medals that day.

Nguyen Thi Anh Vien on November 17 set a new Asian record in the 400m individual medley with a time of 4 minutes and 37.71 seconds at the Asian Swimming Championship 2016 in Japan.

The old record was 4 minutes 41.29 seconds set by Chinese athlete Liu Jing in Dubai, the UAE, in 2002. With the new record, Vien also brought home the first gold medal of the Vietnamese team at the championship, which was held from November 17-20. Vien’s best performance in this event was 4 minutes 13.72 seconds made at the Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games).
