1. APEC officials head to ISOM in Hanoi

Senior officials from the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) member economies gathered at the Informal Senior Officials Meeting (ISOM) in Hanoi on December 9 to discuss priorities and key activities for the 2017 APEC, to be hosted by Vietnam.

Around 200 events, conferences and workshops will be held across the country within the framework of APEC 2017.

2. NA Chairwoman Ngan pays official visit to India

National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan paid a State visit to India from December 8-11 at the invitation of Chairman of the Rajya Sabha (India’s Upper House) Mohammad Hamid Ansari and Speaker of the Lok Sabha (India’s Lower House) Sumitra Mahajan.

During her stay, the leader talked with Speaker of India’s Lower House Sumitra Mahajan, met General Secretary of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) Sitaram Yechury; Indian President Pranab Mukherjee; representatives from the India Fund; CPI General Secretary Sudhakar Reddy; President of the Indian National Congress Party Sonia Gandhi; President of the India-Vietnam Solidarity Committee in India’s West Bengal State Greetesh Sharma; Indian Vice President and Chairman of the Senate Mohammad Hamid Ansari; Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

She visited the Indian Parliament Building and attended a session of the Indian House of People and Council of States as an observer. She also laid flowers at the Mahatma Gandhi Monument.

3. Works begin on one of the largest ecotourism areas in Lang Son

Construction on the Mau Son Snow Mountain entertainment and ecotourism area began in Loc Binh District in the northern mountainous province of Lang Son on December 10.

The project, one of the largest in the province, is being funded by Mau Son Snow Mountain Joint Stock Company with a total investment of nearly VND3.5 trillion. The project is also expected to create jobs for more than 2,500 local people, contributing to the region’s economic development.

4. World-class hospital put into operation in Quang Ninh

Vingroup inaugurated and put into operation an international-standard polyclinic in the city of Ha Long in the northern province of Quang Ninh on December 6.

Located in Hong Gai Ward in Ha Long, the Vinmec Ha Long Hospital has a total floor area of over 28,000m2 and consists of eight floors and one basement. It is the fifth hospital in the Vinmec chain, an international-quality health system launched by Vingroup in 2012. The VND660 billion (US$29 million) hospital has a capacity of 150 beds, with ten specialised departments that are capable of meeting the needs of 200,000 outpatient visitors per year.

5. International Guitar Festival opens in HCMC

More than 60 foreign and Vietnamese guitarists are performing at the third International Guitar Festival, which opened in Ho Chi Minh City on December 7.

Organised by the HCMC Music Conservatory, the festival runs until December 11.

The festival includes workshops and master classes with experienced guitarists. The shows are taking place at the conservatory’s music hall at 112 Nguyen Du Street in District 1. Tickets are available at the box office.

6. Vietnamese short film wins award in Singapore

Vi (“Taste”), a film by Vietnamese director Le Bao, won the “Most Promising Project” award at the Singapore International Film Festival, which took place from November 23 to December 4.

The film is about a Nigerian football player named Bassley, who goes through many jobs in Ho Chi Minh City to earn a living in the hope of being reunited with his wife and children.

7. Vietnam says good-bye to AFF Suzuki Cup 2016

Mistakes made by the defensive line forced Vietnam to leave the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF)’s Suzuki Cup 2016 after a 2-2 draw with Indonesia in the semi-finals’ second leg at home on December 7.

8. Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam cultural week kicks off

The Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam Culture Week officially kicked off at the Museum of Vietnamese Ethnic Groups in Thai Nguyen city on December 8.

During the festival, a series of exhibitions will display Vietnamese Ao Dai, traditional costumes of Malaysia and Indonesia, an Indonesian Batik painting performance, a Vietnamese embroidery workshop and a Malaysian culinary competition.

9.International Kite Festival opens in Vung Tau

An International Kite Festival themed “Dance of Peace” was held in Vung Tau in the coastal province of Ba Ria–Vung Tau on December 9.

The annual festival, the seventh of its kind, has attracted 94 artisans, including 64 foreigners from 23 nations and territories, including the US, the UK, Taiwan (China), Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Ukraine, Scotland (UK), New Zealand, Italy, Brazil, Holland, France, Japan, Switzerland, Australia and South Africa. The rest are from kite clubs thoughout the nation.
