1. Government’s monthly cabinet meeting for January 2017

The regular monthly cabinet meeting for January 2017 took place in Hanoi on February 3.

During the session, the Government reviewed the socio-economic situation during the recent Tet festival and evaluated the implementation of the government’s Resolution No. 01/NQ-CP CP on major tasks and solutions guiding and directing the implementation of the socio-economic development plan and State budget estimate in 2017.

Cabinet members also commented on a draft decree on goods, services and localities exercising a State monopoly in trade activities, a draft Law on Forest Protection and Development and a law and ordinance development plan for 2018.

2. Outstanding press works on Party building awarded

A total of 47 prizes including 3 A, 7 B, 12 C and 25 consolation prizes, were presented to outstanding entries in the National Press Awards on Party building.

Nhan Dan (“The People”) newspaper journalists Ha Quoc Viet and Tieu Phuong were among three A prize winners, together with their colleagues from Quan Doi Nhan Dan (“People’s Army”) newspaper and Vietnam Television.

3. Nhan Dan launches online Russian version

Nhan Dan (“The People”) newspaper officially launched its online Russian-language version at a ceremony in Hanoi on February 3.

The Russian version of Nhan Dan Online includes nine categories: politics, world, economics, society, culture, sports, travel, video clips and photo stories. Nhan Dan’s Russian-language website is available on the web at http://ru.nhandan.org.vn.

4. Foreign investment pledges reach US$1.4 billion in January

Vietnam attracted US$1.423 billion in both new and additional foreign direct investment (FDI) in January, up 23% year on year.

Meanwhile, disbursement was estimated at US$850 million, a 6.3% increase over the same month last year. FDI pledges in January mainly flowed to the manufacturing sector, with US$834.9 million or more than two thirds of the total investment, followed by US$297.4 million in the property sector.

5. Tree-planting festivals launched nationwide

Tree-planting festivals have been launched around the country, contributing greatly to the cause of protecting and developing forests, thereby preserving a sound environment for national socio-economic development.

President Tran Dai Quang on February 2 launched a Tree-Planting Festival in memory of the late President Ho Chi Minh in Cam Son Commune, Cam Pha District in the northern province of Quang Ninh.

6. Traditional festivals kick off across the country

Many traditional festivals have kicked off across the country, including Huong Pagoda Festival and the Giong Festival in commemoration of Saint Giong in Hanoi, the Huong Tich Pagoda Festival in Ha Tinh Province and a festival dedicated to Au Co—the legendary mother of Vietnam in Phu Tho Province.

In addition, cultural festivals of ethnic minority peoples, such as the Mong and Tay groups, were also held.

The festivals attracted a large number of visitors.

7. Vietnam welcomes first e-Visa visitor

Richard Kenneth Wilson (Britain), the first e-Visa tourist to Vietnam, is greeted at the Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City.

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Tourism and the Immigration Management Department held a ceremony at Tan Son Nhat International Airport on February 4 to greet Richard Kenneth Wilson of Britain, the first e-Visa visitor to Vietnam.

Earlier, Wilson applied for an entry e-Visa to stay in Vietnam from February 3 to March 5. The Immigration Management Department granted the first Vietnamese e-Visa to him on February 1, the same day as the Government Decree No. 07/2017/ND-CP took effect.
