1. NA Standing Committee convenes eighth meeting
The eighth meeting of the 14th National Assembly Standing Committee (NASC) opened in Hanoi on March 14 and will conclude on March 21. A number of important contents are to be discussed in preparation for the upcoming third plenary session of the 14th NA.
During its week-long sitting, the NASC will comment on five draft laws, which were debated for the first time at the second meeting of the NA previously, and two new draft laws to be submitted to the NA for consideration for the first time at the upcoming third session, while considering and approving two draft resolutions.
2. National press festival underway in Hanoi

The 2017 National Press Festival took place in Hanoi from March 17 to 19, featuring the participation of 470 press agencies from across the country.
This year’s festival displayed 437 publications, including special editions for 2017 New Year and Tet (Lunar New Year). In addition, nearly 100 special TV shows for Tet and online newspaper interfaces as well as over 250 outstanding reports on the environment in 2016 were introduced to visitors.
3. Foreign diplomats join friendship spring tour in Hanoi
About 300 delegates, who are government officials and representatives of diplomatic missions and international organisations in Vietnam, visited Tay Phuong Temple, a special national site in Hanoi, as part of a friendship spring tour on March 18.
The annual tour aimed to introduce Vietnam’s historic sites and tourist attractions to foreign friends and facilitate exchanges and mutual understanding between Vietnam and foreign countries. The trip ended with a show including ao dai modelling as well as dancing and singing performances.
4. Vinamilk inaugurates first organic dairy farm in Vietnam
The farm accommodates 500 milk cows.
Giant dairy producer Vinamilk on March 13 inaugurated a dairy farm in the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong, the first organic dairy farm to meet European standards in Vietnam.
The construction of the farm began in 2014, covering more than 70 hectares in the Tu Tra commune of Don Duong District at a total cost of VND200 billion (US$8.8 million).
5. Tourist code of conduct released nationwide
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has released a code of conduct for tourists nationwide for the first time. The code of conduct aims to improve the image of Vietnamese tourists and promote Vietnam as a safe and hospitable destination.
Accordingly, international and local tourists, tour operators and locals at tourism spots should respect local customs and culture, abide by regulations at both tourist and public sights, provide help for the disabled, the elderly, children and women, and protect the environment.
6. Con Dao among Asia’s idyllic sea escapes: CNN

Con Dao island in the southern province of Ba Ria – Vung Tau has been named by the US Cable News Network (CNN) as one of Asia’s most idyllic and crowd-free sea escapes. CNN praised the island for its untouched coral reefs, beautiful granite cliffs, palm-shaded beaches, rainforest trails and chic beach resorts.
Earlier, Con Dao island was listed on Asia’s top ten spots by Lonely Planet, the largest travel guide book publisher in the world. Travel + Leisure magazine also named this destination as one of the best secret islands on earth.
7. Liem crowned champion at HDBank int’l chess tourney

Vietnamese grandmaster Le Quang Liem claimed the championship title at the 2017 HDBank International Chess Tournament on March 17, scoring seven points after nine matches. The victorious finish earned Liem US$13,000 in prize money and an additional 8.8 elo points, which will see his elo rating increase to 2,721 after this competition.
8. Vietnam in Group E at 2017 FIFA U20 World Cup

The results of the draw for the final round of the 2017 FIFA U20 World Cup held in Suwon, the Republic of Korea (ROK) on March 15 put U20 Vietnam team in Group E with France, New Zealand and Honduras.
The World Cup finals are taking place from May 20 to June 11 in six cities in the ROK. According to the schedule, in their first clash, U20 Vietnam will meet U20 New Zealand on May 22. The second will be followed on May 25 with France and the third with Honduras on May 28.
