19th National External Affairs Conference convenes in Hanoi

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and heads of Vietnamese representative missions abroad are ready to work alongside domestic cities and provinces in fostering external relations with other countries, said Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Pham Binh Minh, at the 19th National External Affairs Conference.

The biennial event took place in Hanoi on August 12, under the theme “Activeness and creativeness for effective integration and sustainable development”, and was organised ahead the 30th Diplomatic Conference, scheduled for August 12 – 17, bringing together 500 delegates from ministries, state agencies and departments of external affairs of 63 cities and provinces nationwide alongside the heads of Vietnam’s diplomatic missions overseas.

Vietnam’s growth potential is strong: Moody’s

Vietnam continues to retain its comparative advantage in the export of labour-intensive goods,such as textiles and garments.

Moody’s Investor Services estimates that Vietnam’s growth potential is strong, at around 6.5%, supported by the increasingly efficient use of labour and capital in the economy, in its latest report issued on August 10.

Moody’s has upgraded the Government of Vietnam’s long-term issuer and senior unsecured ratings from B1 to Ba3 and changed the outlook from positive to stable. The firm has also raised Vietnam’s long-term foreign currency (FC) bond ceiling from Ba2 to Ba1, and its long-term FC deposit ceiling from B2 to B1.

Prime Minister urges measures to enhance dam safety

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has signed a directive calling for increased efforts to ensure the safety of dams and reservoirs.

According to the Directorate of Water Resources, currently 80 out of 286 large reservoirs in the northern region are now full, while the number of full large reservoirs in the north central region is at 22 out of 132. A significant number of smaller reservoirs are also full, while others have a water level at 65-85% of their capacities.

18 antiques returned to Vietnam

Vietnamese Ambassador to Germany, Doan Xuan Hung, handed over 18 antiques from different cultural periods to the National Museum of Vietnamese History in Hanoi on August 9.

There are five objects from the Dong Nai culture, dating back 4,000-3,500 years, five of late New Stone Age and early Central Highland Metal Age, 4,000-3,500 years ago, and eight from the Dong Son culture, 2,500-2,000 years ago.

Phan Thi Mo crowned World Miss Tourism Ambassador

Phan Thi Mo – a Vietnamese delegate - has defeated 49 contestants from many countries around the globe to be crowned as the World Miss Tourism Ambassador 2018, in Thailand, on August 8.

Phan Thi Mo was in the top 18 of the Best Body Category and won the Best Costume for Tourism Promotion. She was highly regarded by both the judges and the audience throughout the competition.

She was born in 1990 in Tien Giang Province. She is 172cm tall, weighs 46 kg, and measures 90-57-100. She finished in the top 5 at Miss Vietnam World 2010.

44 new caves found in Phong Nha – Ke Bang national park

An additional 44 caves have been discovered in Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park in the central province of Quang Binh, raising the total caves found so far in this area to 405, according to the park’s management board.

Vo Van Tri, head of the park’s Science and International Cooperation Office, said it is necessary to conduct an in-depth study to better understand the values of the newly-found caves, contributing to their sustainable preservation and exploitation.

Dubbed the “Kingdom of Caves”, Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park was declared a World Natural Heritage by UNESCO twice in July 2003 and July 2015 thanks to its impressive scenery and archaeological value.

Vietnam crowned VTV Volleyball Cup 2018

The Vietnamese national team beat the Democratic People's Republic of Korea 3-1 in the final match on August 11 to seal the championship title of the VTV International Women's Volleyball Cup 2018.

The Vietnamese women cruised to respective 25-14, 25-19, and 25-15 victories in three straight sets of the match.

The 2018 VTV Women’s Volleyball Cup, taking place from August 4 to 11 in Ha Tinh province, attracted the participation of eight teams, including six international clubs, the Vietnamese national team, and the Vietnamese youth team.

Vietnam’s Thai Son Nam earned a ticket to the final of the AFC Futsal Club Championship Indonesia 2018 for the first time after coming from behind to defeat Lebanon’s Bank of Beirut 6-5, in a thrilling semi-final match at the tournament in Indonesia, on August 10.

Thai Son Nam have had surprising success in this tournament after beating three-time Asia champions Nagoya Oceans of Japan 3-2 in the quarter-finals, which inspired coach Miguel Rodrigo’s team in the semi-final encounter against Bank of Beirut.
