NDO – The Party chief’s visit to Russia, new school-year opening ceremonies for 23 million students and Vietnam’s fastest growth in tourist arrivals are among the notable events over the past week.

Party chief visits Russia and Hungary

Party General Secretary, Nguyen Phu Trong, paid an official visit to Russia from September 5-8, under which Vietnam and Russia issued a 40-point joint statement on the outcomes of the visit and signed various cooperation agreements.

General Secretary Trong and President Putin affirmed the consistent policy of strengthening the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries in order to meet the long-term interests of their peoples, and agreed on the importance of maintaining their joint efforts to promote cooperation in all areas.

On the afternoon of September 8 (local time), the Party chief concluded his visit to Russia and began his official four-day visit to Hungary, at the invitation of Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

Lao Freedom Order presented to Vietnamese officials

President of the Lao Front for National Construction Saysomphone Phomvihane, has presented the Freedom Order (Issara) to the leaders of a number of Vietnamese agencies, in recognition of their contributions to enhancing the traditional friendship, special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation between the two countries.

The honour was granted to officials of the Party Central Committee’s Mass Mobilisation Commission, the Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) Central Committee, and the Government’s Committees for Ethnic Affairs and Religious Affairs at a ceremony in Hanoi on September 4.

New academic year begins for 23 million students in Vietnam

More than 23 million Vietnamese pupils attended ceremonies to open the 2018-2019 academic year on the morning of September 5, as Vietnam continues to carry out resolutions on comprehensive educational reform.

School opening ceremonies were conducted in a succinct and student-oriented manner and were attended by many Party and State leaders. In the 2018-2019 academic year, the education sector will continue to implement nine tasks and five groups of measures to enhance educational quality.

Dong Nai leads in trade surplus in eight months

The southern province of Dong Nai enjoyed a trade surplus of US$1.8 million during the January-August period of 2018, accounting for 64% of the whole country’s trade surplus, stated the provincial Department of Industry and Trade.

The export turnover of Dong Nai was estimated at US$12.2 billion in the first eight months, an annual rise of 12%, while the import turnover was US$10.4 billion in the period. According to the General Statistics Office, Vietnam produced a trade surplus of US$2.8 billion in the first eight months of 2018.

Floods leave 15 dead, 4 missing in northern, central provinces

Floods and landslides in the northern mountainous and central provinces have killed 15 people and left four missing, along with heavy losses in property, according to the Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control.

Torrential rains persisting from late August, which led to serious floods and landslides, have ravaged the northern mountainous provinces of Son La, Lao Cai, Cao Bang, Yen Bai and Lai Chau and central Thanh Hoa and Nghe An provinces.

As many as 364 houses were destroyed, while 754 other families have had to evacuate. Floods drowned 6,523 hectares of rice and crops, with the largest area of 4,586 hectares located in Thanh Hoa province.

Vietnamese students win four medals at International Olympiad in Informatics

The Vietnamese team at the 30th International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI 2018), which took place in Japan from September 1-7, brought home four medals including one gold, one silver and two bronze medals, the Ministry of Education and Training’s Department of Quality Management said on September 7.

This year event saw the participation of 335 contestants from 87 countries and territories across the five continents. With all four students winning medals, the Vietnamese delegation ranked 2nd in the Southeast Asian region and 12th among the attending countries.

Vietnam sees fastest growth in tourist arrivals

Vietnam was named among the destinations with the biggest year-over-year increase in international tourist arrivals, according to the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO)’s report.

Vietnam ranks third in the top 10 countries with the biggest increase in international tourist arrivals in 2017 compared to 2016. In particular, Egypt increased 55.1%, Togo (46.7%), Vietnam (29.1%), Palestine (25.7%); and Niue (25.4%).

VTV secures rights for Asian Cup 2019

Vietnam Television (VTV) has secured the rights to broadcast the AFC Asian Cup 2019, which will take place in the United Arab Emirates from January 5 to February 1 next year.

The Asian Cup will feature 24 teams for the first time in its history. Vietnam are in Group D with Yemen, as well as two former champions Iran and Iraq.

Earlier, VTV also won the rights to broadcast the AFF Suzuki Cup 2018, which is scheduled to take place from November 8 to December 15.

Three Vietnamese footballers in FOX Sports’ Asian Games Best XI

The team of the tournament by FOX Sports Asia from the recently concluded Asian Games 2018.

Three of the best players from the national Olympic Vietnam football team made the Asian Games 2018’s team of the tournament as selected by FOX Sports Asia.

The Vietnamese footballers listed are all under-23 (U23) players, including centre back Bui Tien Dung, centre midfielder Nguyen Quang Hai and right back Vu Van Thanh.

They were selected for their outstanding performances at the recently concluded tournament in Indonesia, as well as for their prospects to shine in the future, according to FOX Sports Asia.
