NA Chairwoman visits RoK

National Assembly (NA) Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan paid an official visit to the Republic of Korea (RoK) from December 4-7 at the invitation of Speaker of the RoK’s parliament Moon Hee-sang.

At the talks and meetings between the two sides, RoK leaders expressed their belief that the trip would continue in giving a boost to the two parliaments’ relations and greatly help with the extensive development of the countries’ strategic cooperative partnership.

Leaders of both sides also witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding on an action plan, for raising bilateral trade to US$100 billion in a balanced manner by 2020, between Vietnamese Minister of Industry and Trade Tran Tuan Anh and Korean Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Sung Yunmo.

Cambodian PM Hun Sen pays official visit to Vietnam

Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen concluded his official visit to Vietnam from December 6 to 8 at the invitation of his Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Xuan Phuc.

PMs Hun Sen and Nguyen Xuan Phuc held a joint press conference and witnessed the signing of five cooperation documents, namely a government-level MoU on the Vietnam-Cambodia transport cooperation strategy for 2018-2025 with a vision to 2030; MoUs on the completion of negotiations on a border trade agreement and educational cooperation; the minutes on the completion of 84% of the border demarcation and marker planting work in the field as well as future plans for the work; and an agreement on the implementation of a project using Vietnam’s non-refundable aid for Cambodia to build various items in the community-based voluntary drug detoxification centre project in Preah Sihanouk province.

Vietjet CEO ranked 44th among the world’s most 100 powerful women

Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Vietnam’s budget airline Vietjet Air, has been ranked 44th in the annual list of the world’s most 100 powerful women, recently released by Forbes magazine.

Thao moved up 11 places when compared to last year’s ranking. Her actual net worth as of December 6, 2018, was estimated at US$2.6 billion, much greater than the 2017 figure of US$1.98 billion.

The 48-year-old businesswoman is the co-founder and Chairwoman of Sovico Holdings, President and CEO of Vietjet Air, and Permanent Vice Chairwoman of HDBank. She is also the only self-made female billionaire in Southeast Asia.

Giang Brothers set new world record in Italy

Vietnamese acrobatic brothers Giang Quoc Co and Giang Quoc Nghiep have set a new world record with their head-balancing act in Rome, Italy, announced the Guinness World Records on December 5 (local time).

Accordingly, the Giang brothers were required to perform a head-to-head balancing act in a studio, walking up and down 10 steps while blindfolded within one minute. The Vietnamese circus artists finished their performance earlier, in just 53.97 seconds.

Quoc Co, 34, and Quoc Nghiep, 29, are currently working in the Ho Chi Minh City Circus Association. In December 2016, the brothers previously set a Guinness World Record with their head-to-head balancing act by scaling 90 stairs in 52 seconds on the steps of Girona Cathedral in Spain.

Vietnam’s futsal goalie nominated for the Best Goalkeeper of the World Award

Ho Van Y, the goalie of Vietnam’s national futsal team, has been named among the top ten candidates for the Best Goalkeeper of the World Award in the 19th edition of the UMBRO Futsal Awards.

With his significant contributions to Vietnam’s national futsal team, and especially Thai Son Nam Club during the 2018 season, Ho Van Y has received the honour of being among the top ten nominees for the “Best Goalkeeper” category.

This is the first time that a Vietnamese futsal player has been included in the list of nominees for the UMBRO Futsal Awards.

Vietnam secure ticket to AFF Cup finals

Vietnam beat the Philippines 2-1 in the second leg of the ASEAN Federation Football (AFF) Suzuki Cup 2018 semi-finals on December 6 to advance to the finals, thanks to the 4-2 results on aggregate.
In the return leg, which took place at Hanoi’s My Dinh Stadium on Thursday night, two late goals from Nguyen Quang Hai and substitute Nguyen Cong Phuong helped Vietnam take a 2-0 lead in the last minutes of the second half, before James Younghusband scored a consolation goal for the Philippines.

With this result, coach Pak Hang-seo’s side entered the finals with an aggregate score of 4-2. The team will travel to Kuala Lumpur’s Bukit Jalil Stadium for the first leg of the finals on December 11, before returning to My Dinh Stadium four days later for the return match to decide the overall winners.

Vietnam’s first aircraft engine parts factory inaugurated

Vietnam’s first aircraft engine parts factory, Hanwha Aero Engines, was inaugurated at the Hoa Lac High-tech Park in Hanoi, on December 6.

The plant was invested in by Hanwha Aerospace Co, Ltd, from the RoK, with a total investment of US$ 200 million. Construction began on the factory on September 21, 2017 and it is expected to ship its first product in January 2019.

The Hanwha Aero Engines plant, with a competitive production capacity, is expected to promote the development of Vietnam’s aero industry in the future.
