Top Vietnamese leader pays official friendly visit to Laos

General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam and President Nguyen Phu Trong arrived in Vientiane on the morning of February 24, beginning an official friendly visit to Laos at the invitation of General Secretary of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party (LPRP) Central Committee and President Bounnhang Vorachith.

At the talks between the top Vietnamese leader and his Lao counterpart, the two pledged to continuously consolidate and develop the great friendship, special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation between the two Parties, States and people of Vietnam and Laos, considering it as a crucial factor to ensure the success of national construction and defence in each country.

President of Argentina pays State visit to Vietnam

President of the Argentine Republic Mauricio Macri arrived in Hanoi on February 19 to begin a three-day State visit to Vietnam at the invitation of President Nguyen Phu Trong.

The guest held talks with Party General Secretary and President Nguyen Phu Trong, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and Chairwoman of the National Assembly Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan. The Vietnamese side affirmed that Vietnam always sees Argentina as a leading Latin American partner and wants to enhance the bilateral comprehensive partnership, especially in economics, trade and investment.

The two sides agreed to intensify the countries’ comprehensive partnership towards a strategic partnership in the future.

Vietnam and South Sudan establish diplomatic ties

On February 21, Vietnam and South Sudan signed a joint communiqué on establishing diplomatic relations between the two countries at the headquarters of Vietnam’s permanent mission to the United Nations (UN) in New York.

The two sides agreed to exchange diplomatic representatives at the ambassadorial level and apply the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

With the establishment of diplomatic ties with South Sudan, Vietnam now has diplomatic relations with 54 out of the 55 countries in Africa.

PM inspects preparations for DPRK-USA Summit

On February 24, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc visited the International Media Centre (IMC) in Hanoi to inspect preparations for the upcoming DPRK-USA Hanoi Summit Vietnam.

PM Phuc stressed that the summit is a prominent international event which has attracted much attention from the world and is significant to regional and global peace.

The PM showed his pleasure at the progress of the preparation work, stressing the need to ensure absolute safety for foreign guests to Hanoi and Vietnam during the occasion. Earlier the same day, PM Phuc also checked the security control centre for the DPRK-USA Hanoi Summit Vietnam.

Vietnam officially begins export of mangos to US

Vietnam has now begun officially exporting its mangoes to the US market, after the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) gave permission for the import of fresh mangoes from the Southeast Asian nation in 2017, announced the Plant Protection Department under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development on February 18.

Mango has become the sixth Vietnamese fruit allowed to enter the US market, following dragon fruit, rambutan, lychee, longan, and star apple. To clear way to sell its mangoes in the world’s biggest economy, the PPD applied for a licence in 2009.

Mango is one of Vietnam’s fruits of strength with a total of nearly 90,000ha of farms nationwide, producing nearly 800,000 tonnes per year. Vietnam has nearly 50 delicious mango varieties.

Thousands of young people nationwide have left home to join the army for their military service in late February.

Ceremonies to see off newly-recruited soldiers were held at localities across the country over the past week.

Tulip festival in Ba Na Hill sets Guinness Vietnam Record

The ongoing tulip festival at the Sun World Ba Na Hills tourism complex, in the central coastal city of Da Nang, has been recognised by the Guinness Vietnam Record as the biggest of its kind in Vietnam.

Taking place from February 14 to March 31, the festival with theme "Land of Colourful Flowers" has turned the area into a little "Netherlands” with over 1 million bulbs, along with special art performances. The flowers have been imported directly from the Netherlands and grown in the Central Highland city of Da Lat, which has ideal weather conditions for tulips.

Vietnam miss out on AFF U22 final berth

Vietnam failed to book their place in the title match of the 2019 AFF U22 Youth Championship after succumbing to a 0-1 defeat against Indonesia in their semifinal clash at Cambodia’s National Olympic Stadium on February 24.

As the semifinal losers, Vietnam will play the third-place playoff on February 26, while Indonesia play the title match with the winners of the other semifinal clash between Thailand and Cambodia.
