NDO - The Spanish navy rescued 458 migrants, including 13 children, from nine boats in the Mediterranean on August 7 as they attempted to make the crossing from Morocco to Spain, according to Reuters and Xinhua news agencies.

According to the International Organisation of Migration, Spain has overtaken Italy as the preferred destination for migrants from Africa to the European Union.

The migrants aimed for Spain after the Libyan authorities stepped up their crackdown and Italy closed its sea ports, making it more difficult for migrants to reach Italian shores.

For the past seven months, close to 23,000 people have arrived in Spain by sea, with 307 dying in the attempt to reach their “promised land”.

On August 7, Turkish authorities projected that the number of refugees fleeing from the country to Europe would increase by 60% this year, which is attributed to Turkey’s tightened immigration and naturalisation rules for refugees, who are mainly Syrians.

Turkey has so far allowed the naturalisation of between 50,000 and 80,000 Syrian migrants.
