NDO - The 2018 Mekong Delta Agricultural and Fishery Technologies Forum opened in the southern city of Can Tho on May 25.

The forum was jointly organised by the Department of Technology Application under the Ministry of Science and Technology, Cuu Long University, and the Asian Industry and Information Association.

The event is part of a programme on connecting the supply and demand of technologies, with an aim to introduce smart technology solutions based on the Internet of Things (IoT) platform to serve sustainable agriculture and adaptation to climate change.

Speaking at the forum, Deputy Minister of Science and Technology, Tran Van Tung, said that thanks to investment in research and application of science and technology in the field of agricultural production in Mekong Delta localities, research institutes and enterprises have created many high-value plant varieties and livestock breeds through the application of advanced production technologies, bringing greater economic efficiency and contributing to local socio-economic development.

However, the Mekong Delta is facing many challenges due to climate change and rising sea levels, causing extreme weather phenomena which directly affect the production and livelihoods of the people, he said, adding that it is necessary to promote the research, transfer, and application of technologies in agricultural production in the region, especially new and smart technologies in order to increase the productivity and quality of products, while increasing the competitiveness of products.

Vice Chairman of the Can Tho municipal People’s Committee Dao Anh Dung said that it is necessary to shift from food security based agricultural production to commodity agricultural production with a diverse and large scale, so that the Mekong Delta is not only the place to absorb and apply science and technology achievements of the world, but is also able to create new models in agriculture which are adapted to climate change.
