NDO – A Gala Dinner promoting Vietnamese culture was held in Incheon city, the Republic of Korea (RoK) on June 7 within the framework of the first Overseas Vietnamese (OV) Economic Forum 2019. The event was attended by leaders of ministries, sectors, and localities of Vietnam as well as many RoK politicians.

A number of policies encouraging OVs’ investment in the homeland

In his opening speech, Tu Thanh Hue, Head of the Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF)’s Committee for External Affairs and Overseas Vietnamese, conveyed warm and welcome greetings to the VFF Central Committee to delegates at the forum, which is the first of its kind to be held for Vietnamese business community who are living and working in the RoK.

He stressed that the VFF has always acted as a bridge between Vietnamese people at home and abroad with their homeland, towards building a strong and prosperous country. He hailed significant contributions made by the OVs, particularly OVs businesses, to the national construction and development as well as the national great solidarity bloc.

He expressed his hope that the forum would continue upholding the OVs’ contributions, encouraging them to make more investment in the homeland while serving as “friendly ambassadors” linking Vietnam and the host countries.

Peter Hong, Vice Standing President and Secretary General of the Business Association of Overseas Vietnamese (BAOOV) pointed out that although a number of supportive policies have been promulgated to encourage OVs’ investment in the homeland, the policies have not yet been fully and effectively implemented in many places, causing a lot of difficulties for OV businesses’ operation.

To resolve these difficulties, the BAOOV has been active in hosting trade promotion programmes, helping Vietnamese businesses to attend economic forums abroad so that they will have opportunity to survey the market demands and ink trade deals with international partners.

BAOOV President Nguyen Thanh My, who has been living abroad for many years, started investing in the homeland in 2004. My, who is also Chairman & CEO of Rynan Smart Fertilisers Joint Stock Company, said that Vietnam’s market is so full of potential that more and more business opportunities have been opened up for him since he first invested in it.

After years doing business in Vietnam, what has inspired My the most is that there are more and more policies creating favourable conditions to business community and OV business in particular. He noted with pleasure that over the past few years, the Prime Minister has taken drastic directions to reduce cumbersome administrative procedures for businesses.

Opportunities opened for investment cooperation

According to Peter Hong, the first Overseas Vietnamese Economic Forum will open up huge opportunities for Vietnamese businesses to introduce their products in the RoK, seek trade partnerships, and get access to the latest technologies, thus contributing to shaping guidelines for Vietnam’s economic development.

Sharing the same view, Chairman of the Vietnam Business Association in the Republic of Korea (VIBAK) Tran Hai Linh said that the organisation of the forum is the first step to enhance the connection among OV business community and promote the advantages of businesses associations abroad.

Addressing the gala dinner, Kim Jae Sik, a RoK parliamentary member, said that the bilateral economic link between Vietnam and RoK has grown robustly since the two countries established their diplomatic relations in 1992. Vietnam and RoK become important trade partner of each other not only in economics but also in other fields such as society and education.

Kim said he was glad to see the growing development of the bilateral relations, hailing that OV community in the RoK has made significant contributions to the host country, helping to cement the Vietnam – RoK ties. He also expressed his hope that through the forum, the relationship between the two nations will further develop.

At the event, the Business Association of Overseas Vietnamese and the Business Association of Overseas Vietnamese were presented with certificates of merit from the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee in recognition of their contributions to promoting the solidarity and potential of overseas Vietnamese businesses over the past years.
