Nhan Dan Online – ‘Dap Canh Giua Khong Trung’ (Flapping in The Middle of Nowhere), a Vietnamese film by director Nguyen Hoang Diep, was named the Best Film by the Federation of Film Critics of Europe and the Mediterranean (FEDORA).

The decision was made on September 5 at the 71st Venice Film International Festival.

This is one of major prizes for debut films announced annually during the Venice International Film Critics’ Week.

‘Dap Canh Giua Khong Trung’ tells a story about Huyen (played by Nguyen Thuy Anh), a young girl leaving her home village to enter university in Hanoi. She meets and falls in love with Tung (played by Hoang Ha), a feeble boy who is ready to bet the last penny of his small salary on cock-fighting games.

Tung then has to flee from his creditors, leaving Huyen with an unexpected pregnancy. Huyen badly needs money for an abortion, so she reluctantly agrees to prostitute herself to Hoang (cast by Tran Bao Son), who has an unusual fetish for pregnant women.

According to an article by film reviewer, Clarence Tsui posted on Hollywood Reporter, Diep's film offers a sensitive, sensual and surprisingly candid representation of sexuality and adolescence in Vietnam.

The film also won many compliments and much appreciation from audiences and prestigious film critics during its screening on September 2.

Speaking after the screening, director Nguyen Hoang Diep said that she was happy to join the film crew to create a unique atmosphere and spirit in her premiere full-length film.

The film was screened in the fifth season of the year; it is not spring, summer, autumn, or winter; but it is the season of loneliness and it is full of the sense of femininity, she said.
