NDO – Kien Giang needs to proactively and synchronously implement structural and non-structural measures aiming to cope with climate change and ensure safe, sustainable and effective production.

Vice Chairman of the National Assembly Phung Quoc Hien made the statement at a working session with Kien Giang provincial leaders on September 8 concerning the situation of local socio-economic development in 2016 and development orientations for 2017.

Hien spoke highly of Kien Giang’s efforts to overcome the difficulties caused by drought and saline intrusion, as well as its positive socio-economic development outcomes over the past eight months.

He urged the province to continue performing well on its socio-economic tasks in the remainder of 2016, aiming to create a strong momentum for greater development in 2017.

Kien Giang should boost agricultural restructuring in favour of the response to climate change and rising sea waters on the basis of reviewing and adjusting regional and subregional planning to allocate suitable crops and livestock, NA Vice Chairman Hien said, asking the province to research effective measures to deal with erosion and landslides in coastal areas and sea dikes.

He requested Kien Giang to focus on developing high-quality human resources to meet the local demand for socio-economic development, and make full use of its economic advantages and potential, including in the sea economy, agricultural production, fisheries, tourism and services.

At the meeting, the NA official noted Kien Giang’s proposals concerning construction of 30 irrigation drains in the western sea dike (An Bien-An Minh section) to serve production and daily activities; agricultural restructuring and improvement of livelihood in coastal localities; establishment of Tho Chau island district; and soon approval of the project establishing the Phu Quoc Exclusive Economic Zone.

Earlier on September 7, NA Vice Chairman Hien inspected the waterfront landslide situation at Xeo Nhau fishing port in An Minh district’s Tan Thanh commune, and the venues scheduled for construction of irrigation works on Cai Lon and Cai Be Rivers in An Bien and Chau Thanh districts.
