NDO - The Lao Defence Ministry organised a solemn meeting in Vientiane on July 20 to mark the 55th anniversary of Vietnam-Laos diplomatic ties and 40 years of the Vietnam-Laos Treaty of Amity and Cooperation.

Speaking at the ceremony, Lao Defence Minister Chansamone Chanyalath emphasised the significance of the two events, noting that the two peoples and armies should always maintain, protect and foster the traditional bilateral friendship, special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation between the two nations.

The Laos-Vietnam relationship is a time-honoured friendship between two peoples who are both comrades and brothers, always standing together and ready to make sacrifices for one another, he said.

The two peoples have maintained close bonds in their struggles for national liberation and construction, the minister said; adding that the fruitful relations were built based on good neighbourliness and demonstrated through the struggles against common enemies.

Realising the significance of the Vietnam-Laos special relations, the two sides inked the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation on July 18, 1977, affirming the consistent solidarity, cooperation and support for one another in national construction and defence in each country. This is a crucial historic milestone in the relations between the two Parties and Governments, the minister said.

The Lao Minister went on to say that the Lao Party, Government and Defence have always treasured and promoted relations with Vietnam whilst cooperation between the two nations has been deepened with effective cooperation mechanisms and sound collaboration in various fields, bringing practical benefits to the two peoples.

After the meeting, Minister Chansamone Chanyalath and Vietnamese Ambassador to Laos Nguyen Ba Hung cut the ribbon to open a photo exhibition on the Vietnam-Laos special friendship.
