NDO – Experts from the three Indochina countries of Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos gathered at an annual workshop held in Vietnam’s northern province of Quang Ninh on October 15, to discuss new issues that have impact on the development of the triangle development area.

The yearly event, the seventh of its kind, was jointly held by the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences (VASS), the Royal Academy of Cambodia (RAC) and the Laos Academy of Social Science (LASS).

It offered an opportunity for scientists from the three countries to exchange and share information on issues of mutual concern in the triangle, in the region and around the world, as well as strengthening the friendship and cooperation between the three agencies, contributing to promoting the traditional, long-term and comprehensive friendship and cooperation.

According to Vice President of the VASS, Bui Nhat Quang, the three countries always stand side by side and cooperate closely in the struggle for national independence, construction and defence. At present, the socio-economic, cultural, political and security cooperation among the three nations has been intensified in an increasingly cohesive and reliable manner.

The event was also an important chance for experts and policy makers from the three countries to jointly identify and evaluate the impact of regional and international factors on the cooperation of the three countries, thus proposing measures to promote cooperation in a stronger and improved manner, to ensure the development, peace, prosperity and sustainability of each country and the whole region.

Over the past 30 years, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos have achieved positive achievements in socio-economic development. The three countries have set up the "Development Triangle" mechanism, while actively participating in regional and international cooperation mechanisms, playing an important role in bringing the cooperation in the Greater Mekong Subregion, the ASEAN Community and many other links in Southeast Asia, to a new stage of development.

At the workshop, participants discussed the content of identifying the new context in the cooperation of the three countries, in addition to assessing the shortcomings in the past and proposing orientations and solutions to confirm the role and significance of cooperative relations in the process of economic development of each country in the near future.

Delegates stated that the new development stage requires all three countries to promote sustainable economic cooperation for the benefit of each country and contribute to building a stronger, stable and sustainable ASEAN Economic Community.

In order to promote and increase the effectiveness of economic cooperation among the three countries, they suggested that the three governments continue to support business development, regularly maintain a dialogue mechanism among the authorities concerned and accelerate the update and finalisation of trade and investment agreements, as well as encouraging all economic sectors to participate in trade and investment activities among the three countries.
