NDO – Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh has emphasised the need to further enhance the efficiency of foreign affairs activities and continue to develop Vietnam’s relations with partners in an extensive, stable and effective manner.

Politburo member Minh made the statement at a meeting held by the Foreign Ministry, the Party Central Committee’s (PCC) Commission for External Relations and the National Assembly’s Committee for External Affairs, in Hanoi on March 11 to review the Party, State and NA’s external affairs in 2018 and discuss orientations for 2019.

The deputy PM highly appreciated the coordination between the three agencies in closely following regulations on unified management of external activities, contributing to strengthening cooperation between Vietnam and countries and international organisations across the Party, State and parliamentary channels.

The foreign affairs in 2019 need to be accelerated with the major orientations of maintaining a peaceful environment for development, associated with resolutely and persistently struggling to safeguard national independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity; proactively and actively promoting international integration and attracting resources in service of national development; promoting Vietnam’s role at regional and global forums; and elevating multilateral diplomacy and enhancing the position of the country, he said.

Focus should be put on effectively implementing the PCC Secretariat’s Directive No. 25 on accelerating and elevating multilateral diplomacy, strengthening the campaign and preparing to assume the nonpermanent membership of the UN Security Council (2020-2021 tenure), as well as in making preparations for Vietnam’s role as ASEAN Chair 2020, Deputy PM Minh stated.

He also requested the maintenance of the international integration pace and the coordination in mobilising the signing and ratification of the Vietnam-European Union Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA), in addition to the timely and effective implementation of citizen protection work and the enhancement of the quality of strategic research and forecast work.

At the meeting, delegates agreed that in the context of rapid developments with many unexpected factors in the regional and world situations last year, under the leadership of the Party and State, especially the close coordination between the three bodies, Vietnam’s external affairs gained a number of outstanding achievements in all aspects, and were assessed as a bright spot in the country’s common accomplishments, contributing to improving Vietnam’s position and influence in the international arena.
