NDO - Deputy Prime Minister Vuong Dinh Hue had a working session with the leaders of Tra Vinh province on its socio-economic development and the situation of local cooperatives on March 25.

Speaking at the meeting, Deputy PM Hue praised the Mekong Delta province’s efforts in reducing poverty and building new rural areas, given its poor infrastructure.

Reports show that Tra Vinh province’s poverty rate has been falling by 2.46 percentage points annually, and 4.43 percentage points among the Khmer community. Last year, its income per capita reached an encouraging figure of VND43.65 million (US$1,877).

However, the Deputy PM stated that the province needs to further tap into its advantages in order to bring its socio-economic development to a higher level.

He elaborated that Tra Vinh should focus its efforts on restructuring the agricultural economy towards organic agriculture, while continuing to enhance the business environment and invest in infrastructure at the Dinh An Industrial Park.

The Deputy PM also asked the province to keep paying attention to poverty reduction in ethnic minority groups and enhance the quality of the programme to build new rural areas.

According to Tra Vinh Secretary, Tran Tri Dung, the province currently has 151 cooperatives with total capital of VND157 billion (US$6.75 million), creating jobs for 1,300 workers.

At the working session, Deputy PM Vuong Dinh Hue handed a certificate recognising Tieu Can district as meeting the criteria of a new rural district and another certificate recognising Duyen Hai town as having completed the mission of building new rural areas.
