NDO –The Institute of Strategy and Policy on Natural Resources and Environment (IPONRE) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) held a seminar giving guidance on the supervision and evaluation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on the environment in Hanoi on February 27.

Dr. Nguyen Trung Thang, IPONRE Deputy Director said that the seminar aims to improve the capacity of the Vietnam’s natural resources and environment sector of monitoring and evaluation of priority indicators on environmental resources.

This is also the basis for Vietnam to carry out an action plan on the implementation of Vietnam's Sustainable Development Goals until 2030.

Through the seminar, experts, scientists and planners will be provided with training and information to get a better understanding of the data sources, methods of evaluation, and reports on the implementation of SDGs in localities.

According to Dr. Nguyen Phong, a statistical expert, the Vietnam’s natural resources and environment sector has achieved positive results in carrying out the action plan on the implementation of Vietnam's Sustainable Development Goals until 2030.

However, the environmental monitoring system in Vietnam still has many shortcomings, such as environmental statistics having not been fully published yet as prescribed; lack of important environmental data on the management of hazardous waste, air, waste water, land, and biodiversity; limited human and financial resources from the budget for environmental statistics; and limited international cooperation on environmental statistics.

To overcome these shortcomings, the sector needs to focus on selecting 10 key criteria to prioritize implementation, thereby completing the statistical indicators for these prioritized criteria, Phong noted.
