Nhan Dan – An essay entitled ‘Devoting His Life to the Truong Sa (Spratly) and Hoang Sa (Paracel) Archipelagoes’, by Phan Tung Son, was given the first prize at the awards ceremony for the third ‘Simple but Noble Examples’ writing contest at an awards ceremony held in Hanoi on June 9.

The essay honoured Professor and historian Nguyen Nha, who has devoted his career to researching and collecting documents and historical evidence affirming Vietnam’s sovereignty over the Truong Sa (Spratly) and Hoang Sa (Paracel) archipelagoes.

Two second prizes were awarded to ‘A Father of 234 Children’, by Bang Phuong, and ‘Hang Marin – An Angel’, by Kim Dung.

Three third and nine consolation prizes were also presented at the ceremony.

Addressing the event, Politburo member, Secretary of the Party Central Committee (PCC) and Head of the PCC Commission for Communication and Education, Dinh The Huynh, congratulated the contest winners on accurately reflecting everyday role models whose good deeds and morality are shining examples for others.

The contest has contributed to realising Politburo Instruction No 3 on encouraging the entire population and the army to study and follow President Ho Chi Minh’s moral example, he said.

He also asked press agencies to seek out and acknowledge other outstanding role models to encourage the whole society to participate in good deeds.

The writing contest was launched in 2011 by the Quan doi nhan dan (People’s Army) Newspaper in collaboration with the People’s Army Publishing House, the Press and Publications Department of the PCC Commission for Communication and Education, and Vietnam Television. Hundreds of entries were received from writers all across the country and the organising board selected the best 114 to publish in Quan doi nhan dan Newspaper.
